Chris was the main Lighting Cameraman on the series “The Human Body” for which he received the 1998 RTS Award (Best Camera and Lighting - Factual), and a BAFTA nomination for best Factual Photography. His repertoire of styles and versatility enabled him to shoot for all programme areas including Documentaries and Dramas. He was at ease working on Film or Tape.
He was the DOP on the first series of the Channel 4 Drama Series, ‘Teachers’, shot on location in Bristol. He filmed the location scenes for the two-part special of Absolutely Fabulous filming in the French Alps and London. For his work on ‘The Human Face – with John Cleese’ he received an Emmy nomination for cinematography.
Chris was nominated for a BAFTA for ‘The Edwardian Country House’ (actuality documentary), for Channel 4 and he was the D.O.P. on ‘Walking With Cavemen’ for the BBC, shot mainly in South Africa. ‘Collision Course’, a three-part documentary about transport accidents received all round praise this year. Chris enjoyed the creative challenge of turning in the best results within a budget and bringing his projects in on schedule.
He was always keen to try out new ideas such as the innovational series ‘A to B’ which rewarded Chris with a BAFTA nomination for best cinematography (Factual) in 1994. He was lucky to be one of the first cameramen to use the Sony Hi-definition camera for an IMAX film screened at the Science Museum.
Chris was a man of infinite charm, humour and compassion; much loved and admired by all who had the pleasure of knowing him and working with him and is very much missed.
